Fair housing commitment
Pangea Academy is committed to fair, equitable and inclusive access to affordable and sustainable housing. We follow the Federal Fair Housing Act and all applicable federal, state and local fair housing law.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to live in a safe, healthy, supportive home. That belief is not an add-on to what we do - it is the reason the organization exists, and it is what we mean when we talk about building regenerative communities founded on equity, sustainability and local empowerment.
What fair housing means
Federal law prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing or terms of housing on the basis of:
- Race
- Color
- National origin
- Religion
- Sex, including gender identity and sexual orientation
- Familial status
- Disability
New Mexico law adds three more: ancestry, gender and spousal affiliation.
We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind - in our housing programs, in the application process, in our educational programs, or in community outreach.
Our practices
- Screening is against published criteria only. Applicants for affordable housing units are screened on local residency, income level and housing need. Nothing else.
- Selection is designed against implicit bias. The lottery process and our outreach are built so that who hears about a home, and who is chosen for one, does not turn on who we happen to know.
- Reasonable accommodations are offered to applicants with disabilities, at every stage.
- Staff and partners are trained in anti-discriminatory housing practice.
Requesting a reasonable accommodation or modification
If a disability makes any part of applying for, viewing, or living in one of our homes harder than it should be, you may ask us to change how we do something (an accommodation) or to allow a physical change to the home (a modification). You do not need to use any particular words, fill in a specific form, or disclose a diagnosis to make the request.

If you believe you have been discriminated against

You do not have to come to us first, and you should not feel you have to. You have an independent right to complain directly to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, at no cost, whether or not you have contacted us:
- Online at hud.gov
- By phone at 1-800-669-9777 (TTY 1-800-927-9275)
- By mail to the HUD regional office covering New Mexico
A complaint under the Fair Housing Act must generally be filed within one year of the conduct complained of. Retaliating against someone for making a fair housing complaint is itself unlawful, and we will not do it.

This goes to us, not to HUD. Filing it here does not start a HUD complaint and does not pause the one-year deadline above - if you want a formal investigation, contact HUD directly as well.
