WHY CHOOSE PANGEA ACADEMY?

Taught by people who build

Most sustainable-building curricula are written from research. Ours comes out of four decades of putting up off-grid homes in northern New Mexico, and everything we teach is in use on projects right now.

We teach the house as one system. Thermal mass, insulation, glazing, water capture and treatment, power and food production aren’t separate subjects here, because in a working building they aren’t separate. That’s what most training misses, and it’s where the performance comes from.

Ten courses, 140 chapters, online and at your own pace. Our foundational course in regenerative design and practice is free. Field sessions bring you onto the site to work with the assemblies directly.

We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means our methods are published rather than licensed. One builder puts up dozens of homes a year. A trained workforce puts up thousands — and that’s the point.

ACADEMY FOUNDATIONS

Pangea Academy believes everyone deserves a dignified, healthy, and affordable place to live. Our purpose is twofold: to develop affordable and workforce housing in northern New Mexico designed to be inexpensive to build and inexpensive to operate, and to teach the methods that make it possible.

Two groups. The working households of Taos County — trades, service, school and healthcare workers — who need a home they can afford to keep. And the builders, owner-builders and people entering the trades who want to know how to make one.

Our courses assume no prior experience and go as deep as you want to take them.

We promise two things. To the households we build for: a home that stays affordable after the keys change hands, not just at signing. To our students: methods that work, published openly, with nothing held back — including what we get wrong.

Ten courses, 140 chapters, online and self-paced on any device. Most courses are $55 a month; our foundational course in regenerative design and practice is free. Field sessions bring students onto our Taos County site to work directly with the assemblies — thermal mass, water capture and treatment, off-grid power, integrated growing — while they’re running.

Affordability has to survive the closing. A price you can reach and a house you can’t afford to run isn’t affordable housing.

Build for the place you’re in. A house at 7,000 feet in the high desert is not a house on the Gulf Coast.

Publish, don’t protect. Anything we keep proprietary is something that doesn’t get built.

Measure, and say what we find. Including when performance falls short of the model.

The people who build here should be from here.

Housing decisions belong with the people who’ll live in the housing.
