As apprentices, you will play a pivotal role in supplying lumber to the very structures shaping the future of sustainable off-grid living.   • Responsible Tree Felling Techniques: Master the art of responsible tree felling, understanding the ecological impact and employing techniques that promote sustainability and forest health.

  • Lumber Mill Operations: Gain hands-on experience in operating a lumber mill, from log selection and preparation to the milling process, ensuring efficiency and optimal use of harvested wood.

  • Sustainable Forestry Practices: Learn the principles of sustainable forestry, including selective harvesting, reforestation methods, and habitat preservation, contributing to the longevity of forest ecosystems.

  • Timber Grading and Quality Control: Understand the intricacies of timber grading, ensuring the lumber produced meets quality standards for use in sustainable off-grid construction projects.

  • Integration with Sustainable Design: Explore how lumber plays a crucial role in sustainable design and construction, witnessing firsthand how the harvested wood contributes to the creation of eco-friendly, off-grid buildings at Pangea Academy.

  • Collaborative Project Engagement: Participate in collaborative projects with fellow apprentices and Pangea Academy students, actively contributing to the supply chain that supports the construction of sustainable homes, gaining a holistic understanding of the interconnected nature of sustainable practices.

One month of intensive, hands-on learning in the field in beautiful Taos County, New Mexico. Students are encouraged to signup for 5 months to receive Pangea certification in tree felling and saw mill operations.
Participate in an online curriculum and in the field.

  • 5 days a week, weekends optional, all month long.

  • Lunches provided on-site.

  • On Campus and Local accommodations available.

Accommodations are arranged after registration.

– Camping on-campus: $50/night

Get access to all six Academy Courses. Textbooks available with online web & app resource while in the field.

All field studies include all online courses: Primer, Permits, Structure, Heating & Cooling, Power, Water Supply and Waste Water.
