- Work boots/shoes: Closed toe shoes or boots are MANDATORY for the hands-on portion of the Field Sessions. We recommend more of a work boot or hiking boot/sneaker that can resist rough terrain and has a non-slip sole. Sandals are not permitted during the hands-on Field Session build site time.
- Long pants: Jeans (denim) are recommended for pants (rather than modern lightweight synthetic fabric or athletic wear). Denim resists tears from sharp objects much better than synthetic fabrics and offers more protection for your skin.
- Gloves: Please bring leather gloves AND a pair of rubber gloves for wet work. The less expensive leather gloves offer the best protection for your hands. They also make working with sharp objects much easier. We suggest avoiding more refined leather, as well as any “hi-tech” looking or synthetic fabric gloves because they can be ineffective. Rubber gloves are for cobb, plaster, and/or cement application should also be thick and strong. These gloves are sometimes labeled as “chemical resistant” vice dish washing gloves which could tear while plastering and are not recommended.
- For sun protection, bring hat, bandana, sunscreen, and lip balm.
- Long sleeve shirts: breathable material is helpful, as is a shirt with a collar for various amounts of sun/wind protection. Many of our Field Sessions are located in the high desert of New Mexico, so we can have great fluctuations in weather. During the winter months, it can be as cold as 20 degrees F or less with snow and in the summer months, we can have temperatures of 90 degrees F or more. No matter what time of the year, there is generally quite a significant drop in temperature by nightfall. Additionally, be aware that it is also quite windy in the high desert/mountains. Hence, bring layered clothing to address these weather fluctuations.
- Refillable water bottle, energy snacks, and drinks (water is available on site). We have some stores nearby, so you can purchase these items upon arrival, if needed.
- Notepad: Please bring a notepad.
- Internet: Wifi is available on building sites if you need to connect a device.
The following details will assist in making your arrival a smooth, organized, and pleasant experience. Please read through this information completely.
Arrival and Departure
Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. the first morning of the Field Session. Please plan to stay through the final evening unless you have made other arrangements with us.
Daily schedule
The schedule is subject to change but normally begins at 9:00 AM and can run until approximately 6:00PM in the evening. We really try to maximize the time to cover as much material as possible. Please be responsible and manage your own energy—the days can be long, but you are welcome to rest and observe and take as many breaks as needed.
Meals
Meals are not provided. There are restaurants and grocery stores nearby to accommodate needs.
Accommodations
There is an additional charge to bring your own tent and camp on the Academy Field Sessions. We do not provide bedding, mats, or any manner of camping equipment. Although it can be moderate to fairly warm during the day, temperatures tend to drop considerably at night in the high desert/mountains as low as the mid-thirties to freezing depending on time of year. Please bring extra warm stuff for nighttime sleeping.
Please be self-sufficient, realistic, and plan properly. Camping must be arranged in advanced. If this is not what you had in mind, then please secure off site accommodations. Typically, there are camping sites, HipCamp, hotels, and AirBnb options within the area of the Academy Field Sessions.
If you still have questions about the Field Sessions and related information, please contact us!

We look forward to working with you!
We offer opportunities several times a year. Keep an eye out for an e-mail or on our website for the most up to date information. Reference our Recognition section for detailed information concerning belt requirements and progression program.
You are encouraged to stick it out and make the best of it. All student fees are non-refundable.
The short answer is no you will not be able to build your own sustainable, off-grid structure once you finish your first Academy Field Session. However, much depends on your skill level when arriving at the Academy. There are many components that go into the construction of a sustainable, off-grid structure including water, electricity, heating & cooling, food, permits, etc. You will learn the basics of all of these in our online courses and various types of field sessions, but you will likely need to go through at least three full builds before you are ready to run and build your own project. Reference our Recognition section for detailed information concerning belt requirements and progression milestones. Additionally, if you want to build right away, then you can always hire professionals for many aspects of the construction process of your own structure.
We do allow voice recordings and pictures of the events, but video recording is prohibited.
9am. You are expected to be on the job site and ready by 9am. Earlier is better.
In many cases, we are unable to allow students to stay after their session because we have a new group Academy students coming. However, check with us on availability and details.
In many cases, unfortunately, we cannot accommodate you before the first day of your session. However, please check with us on the possibility and availability.
Tuition is expected to be paid in full before the first day of your Academy session. There is a no refund policy, but you can use your credit for up to 18 months on any program or product less any applicable withhold amount due. Specifically, your payment is nonrefundable, but may be used towards future sessions for up to 18 months. In the event of cancellation or transfer 2 weeks or less before the start of the session date, your deposit amount or 25% of the total cost will be withheld from your program credit. In the event of cancellation or transfer more than 2 weeks prior to the session, we will withhold 15% of the total cost of the program from your credit. This applies to every time you cancel or transfer sessions.
All depends on the Field Session location and other factors. Although we are in general dog friendly, please contact us with details, so we can consider specific factors on a case-by-case basis. Also, this is on a first come first serve basis, there will be a cost, and we cannot guarantee you will be able to bring your dog.
Yes. Wifi is available on all of our builds. Our curriculum is online based as well, so during the build you will be referencing the curriculum via mobile or laptop… printed curriculum is also available at an additional cost.
Yes. There will be multiple student housing options available, as well as camping. You can reserve your own accommodations separate from Pangea Academy suggested arrangements, too.
Yes! Camping is typically allowed on the job site property. This typically includes campers, RVs, buses, tents, etc. Please indicate this in the questionnaire after registration re: accommodations. If you decide to camp, then you will need to have your own vehicle to get to and from the jobsite.
